Image Editing – Quick learning guide
February 9, 2018

Perfectionists have always tried to get things right in the camera itself. However, post-production of images always tend to enhance their photographs. Image editing can be confusing and even tedious, but it is mandatory. This requires a lot of knowledge of photography and the concept of light and shadows. Unlike yesteryears, these days, there are several institutions offering courses on image editing. Let us discuss a few quick tips on photo editing. The world of photo editing is vast and just one article will never suffice but it will be great for a start.

Alignment – Straighten your image first. For example, if you have the horizon in your image make sure it is properly aligned before you begin with other editing techniques.

Content – Check the contents of your image. If there are certain things which are not adding any value to your photograph, try to crop them out. Crop your image using the rule of thirds.

Exposure and Contrast – In case you have not got everything right in your camera itself, manipulate the exposure and contrast of your photograph during post-production. Normally you will get to see a histogram in most editing tools. Slide the pointers according to the level of exposure you require. Contrast refers to the difference between the darkest and the lightest parts of your image. Use the contrast controller to bring in the required contrast. This will prevent your images from looking flat.

Saturation – Saturation is used to make your colors appear more dramatic. Be careful while using the saturation feature. In case you go overboard with it, you will end up losing details in your image as well as introducing harsh impractical colors. Balance the saturation well to make your colors stand out as well as making sure that they look natural.

Color temperature – You must be aware of options present in your camera like incandescent, warm, cool, fluorescent etc. These are collectively known as color temperature or white balance. Manipulate with those in post-production if you missed out during your shoot.

Cleaning – This is one of the most used features in image editing. You must know how to clean an image of all unnecessary spots. For example, consider an old photograph or a photograph shot with unclear camera sensor. This will have certain unnecessary spots and patterns disturbing the image. Use the spot heal tool of Photoshop to clean your images of such unwanted presence.

By the time you get a hold on all the above features, you will also get to know about the several cool presets present in various editing tools. Experiment with them to give your photographs cool looks. Learning Lightroom and Photoshop will be important if you want to be really serious about photography although it is not that these are the only software that does the job. There are several others. But learning Lightroom is easier than the rest as far as I have experienced.

Image editing is interesting yet tedious. It is practice and practice only that will make you comfortable. Gaining perfection in post-production will be a huge step in your photographic career.
