With camera you will need lenses that will serve the purpose for taking great pictures during a fashion shoot. A basic kit lens won’t serve you as great as a prime lens would do. So getting a 50mm F1.8 or 85mm F1.8 will be really useful. These lenses are fast lenses and give a wide aperture to shoot compared to your kit lens which works at F4 or F5.6 , Also using a Tele zoom lens during ramp will also be useful as you won’t be restricted to the focal length to the lens.In such scenario using a 70-200 F2.8 will be the best option as it will blur the background and at the same time give you crisp and sharp images.

Tripod

A Strong and sturdy tripod is a must for any kind of fashion photo shoot. Be it Editorial, Catalogue, High Fashion or Street fashion. A tripod comes in very handy when you have to compose a frame with different elements in the background. A Lot of professional fashion photographers hoot both hand held as well as on tripod depends on the type of shoot.

Lights

There are different types of strobe lights available in market. Some basic strobe lights start with price tag of around INR 25,000 where as some more advance Strobe lights are priced at INR 45,000 to 55,000. Depending on your use and requirement you can go for the ones that suit you the best. Some strobe lights come with an in built battery, which become quite handy during an outdoor shoot.

Backdrops

If it’s an indoor studio shoot, having backdrops is a must as you need to have different options to go with what your models wear. Sometimes contrast and sometimes to compliment the outfit they are wearing. So a basic mix of three to four backdrops is a must for every fashion photographer.

Laptop

Video Source

A decent laptop with high resolution is a must as you would be mostly shooting in RAW. So a Laptop with high memory storage and high RAM is recommended. Latest version of Photoshop and light room should run smoothly on your laptop. Also get the monitor of your laptop color calibrated, to show exact colors that are captured during a shoot. While shooting use tethering cable so that you can view images that you shoot on a bigger screen and check that you don’t miss out on any minute details.

We can divide all these equipment in three categories based on skill level.

Beginners

As a beginner you can start with an entry level DSLR such as Canon EOS 1500D, Nikon D5300, Sony A6500. Paired with a basic Manual or TTL flash by Simpex or Digitek which would cost around INR 1600 for manual and INR 3500 for TTL. A basic 5 in 1 reflector. A sturdy tripod from Digitek.

Intermediate

As an intermediate you can upgrade to Nikon 7200 or Canon Eos 77D or 80D. Get some studio lights by Sonia for around INR 5000. Upgrade your tripod to a Manfrotto tripod. And get some prime lenses either a 50mm or 85mm F1.8

Professional

Here you are talking about some serious equipment. Upgrade to a Canon Eos 5D Mark iv or Nikon D850 or Sony A7R Mark iii. Lenses you can buy at this level would be 70-200mm F2.8. You can also plan for high end strobe lights from either Godox or Elinchrome studio light kit. Here you can choose to go for either wired strobe lights or the one with a built in battery.

Conclusion

It’s not the better equipment or the latest camera that will get you great images but it’s what you see and imagine and how you get it in your final output will make all the difference in your journey in becoming a fashion photographer.
