The Nikon D780 is Nikon’s first step into hybrid camera design, but could there be even bigger news to come?

Nikon’s decision to put the on-sensor phase-detection system of the Z 6 into its new D780 DSLR is a highly a significant step, and not just for that camera but because it might hint at a new Nikon D880!

If Nikon can put the mirrorless Z 6 sensor into the D750 (which is effectively how the D780 came about), the next logical step is to do the same for the Nikon D850 and, using the same naming process, call it the Nikon D880.

This would be a very exciting development. The Nikon D750 is a nice mid-range camera made even better with the D780, but the Nikon D850 is a professional camera right at the pinnacle of DSLR design and with a 45.7-megapixel sensor that approaches medium-format resolution in a camera that’s both wieldy, versatile and affordable enough to tempt plenty of keen amateurs, not just professional photographers.

The Nikon D850 is already in our list of the best cameras for professionals, the best DSLRs all round and the best Nikon cameras to buy today, but if what we predict with a new Nikon D880 actually happens, this camera's reputation would take another massive step forward.

Of course, all this is speculation, but all the technology is in place, Nikon has shown us with the D780 that it’s seen the potential of this hybrid technology and Nikon D850 prices have been steadily falling just like those of the D750 did.
