Travel Photography is a mixture of a variety of other types of photography and Landscapes is one of the most preferred kinds of Travel of photography. As it lets you capture a different location, at a vast stretch. Fitting the essence of the place in just one photograph.

When you are at a natural location, like on the mountains or the beach, and you feel serene and you love the stillness and silence. That is exactly what you have to capture in your camera through landscape photography.

A good landscape photograph is the one which gives the viewers a good detour to the location, without even actually going there. And to create such landscapes, you must understand and master these 5 techniques.

Techniques For Capturing Amazing Landscapes

1. Creative Compositions:

A creative composition is always going to let you capture perfect photographs. So while you are capturing landscapes, the first thing you will need to click a still photograph is a tripod. Never forget to put your camera on a tripod or any other still platform.

Once your camera is stable, then you have to focus on the composition technique that you are going to use. ‘Rule of Thirds’ works very well in landscape photography.  Where you can use either of the horizontal lines to define the Horizon in the photograph.

You can also use symmetry composition to cover the half sky and half ground in the frame.

2. Sunsets & Silhouettes:

One of the most amazing ways of capturing landscapes in a creative way is by capturing their silhouettes. Your photograph will only be defined as beautiful when the outline of your silhouette looks artistic and intense.

So while you are capturing silhouettes, make sure the surrounding is dark and your subject is standing exactly against the light. The best time for landscape silhouettes is sunset.

That brings me to another point, that capturing landscape photographs during sunset is always a good idea, as it captures the scenic beauty and also adds a more beautiful tone of colors to the photograph.

3. Depth of Field:

The best way of capturing landscapes is by having a maximum depth of field, as it will keep a very wide range of field in focus. And every subject in your landscape photography will be highlighted equally.

You can do so, by choosing the smallest Aperture setting. As you know, smaller the Aperture, greater the depth of field. But it also means that less light is hitting the sensor and you might want to increase your ISO for capturing a perfectly bright, in focus landscape photograph.

4. Panoramas:

It is very common to use a wide-angle lens to capture landscapes. But you can get more creative with your pictures and capture multiple pictures in the same location.

Yes, you read it right. Panorama is a very beautiful way to cover a very wide area in one single picture. All you have to do is, capture multiple pictures in the panoramic view and then stitch them together in the post-processing stage.

There are so many reasons why you should prefer Panorama over wide-angle photos, like:

  • You don’t have to buy a new wide-angle lens. A standard lens will do just about fine.

  • It gives a much much wider view than any other lens.

  • The scenic beauty looks unbelievably vast.

5. Thinking Out Of The Box:

At last, the one thing every landscape photographer should do is, thinking out of the box. You must try to get as creative as you can. Because using wide-angle and funky compositions is all getting old now.

Instead, you can do a lot of creative ideas together.

For example, try to capture your landscapes in:

  • Infrared mode. They will certainly look very creative and the photograph will give a very different look than what you would have clicked normally.

  • Aerial Landscape. This is not always possible if you don’t have a drone camera. But whenever you can, then don’t miss the opportunity.

  • Refraction Photography. Refraction photography is where the light turns around and creates an image on the surface. you can refract your photograph, using a lens ball.

  • Long Exposure Landscape. Capture the trail of light. The best time to capture long exposure photograph is in the Night sky full of stars or just after sunset.

  • Astro Photography. Capture the celestial sky, with beautiful stars and galaxies in the night sky.

Creativity is the key to capturing landscape photography. Without that, you will not be able to master any of these techniques and create your best masterpiece.
